Hi everyone,

I need to get my immunization stuff taken care of in case I get into a couple schools I'm waitlisted at, and I"m currently a bit worried. I'm going to get my titers checked, but I'm 24 year old and I got the Hep B series at birth. Is there a possibility I would need to redo the whole 7 month series? Anyone have any experience with this? I'm worried I'd not be able to go to a school based on not having the immunization requirement completed in time :/ thanks to anyone who can help!

Yes, you may have to redo the entire series if your titer comes back negative (I did). That being said, your school should have a system in place if you have a negative titer - I just submitted evidence of my first two shots when I restarted the series, and they gave me an extension so that I could get the third shot when indicated and a titer the following month.

Thank you - one school specifies that we would need to be in the later stages of completion; if I look into this now and start the series within the next 1-2 weeks do you think that would be okay, or have you heard of this being a problem for anyone? Thanks so much for your response.

I have zero idea what "latter stages of completion" means; if the titer comes back negative and you wind up accepted there, I'd call and ask. Keep in mind that you may have a positive titer, and depending on your insurance/etc. you might be offered a booster shot instead of repeating the entire series - no need to worry before you even know what the situation is.

You don't have to repeat the entire series if your titers are low, you get a booster shot and retest your titers in 1 month, and keep repeating until you are immune, but usually one booster does the trick

Solid point, thank you so much for your responses!

The school I go to says the same thing. Basically get one booster ASAP. Then you need to submit proof that you have other dates lined up (if needed). Honestly, you'll be fine to start as long as you are diligent. Getting off the wait list is likely the harder part.

I had to do the whole series and just had to submit the records that I finished the series. They didn't even ask for a repeat titer.

A tip for you.. go to your local pharmacy and get a Hep B booster. Then go to your doctor and check your titer. Much better than having a negative titer and repeating a whole series.

I thought I was immune because I too had my shots as a kid, but had my titers returned as negative, so I had to undergo the entire series over again during first year. It's really not a big deal. Your Hep B immunization status will have absolutely zero effect on your waitlist status.

Similar question... My titer came back positive, however on my vaccination records I only got 2 shots with a signed note from the physician saying children 8-12 only need 2 rounds not 3... But the requirement for medical school is 3. What should I do? I am immune so just get a booster to mark the box for that 3rd shot? Or try to explain?

My titer came back negative. My school doesn't care as long as I've started the series before the first day of class
