Hey y'all,

I am currently looking for a new job. I have been a scribe for about a year. Would it be unwise for me to get another scribe position (in terms of application purposes)? I don't have much research experience (and I'm eager to gain some) so I was thinking of finding a research assistant position for the year, but I'm having some trouble. I'm just nervous about "repeating" an EC...still scribing, just at a different clinic.

Any thoughts? Thanks!!

Edit: I enjoy being a scribe, for what it's worth. I just think I might be missing an opportunity to have an entirely new experience (for both myself and my application).

For what purpose are you looking to get a new position? If it's primarily to earn money because you can't afford to live on what you make from your first job, then you work wherever someone will hire you (although it may be worthwhile to see if your first job will let you pick up more hours before going through all the hassles of starting up with a new employer). If it's primarily to improve your app, then I'd suggest finding a volunteer gig over taking either another scribing job or a research gig. The vast majority of applicants would benefit from having more long term community service experience on their apps, either clinical or nonclinical, and volunteering does not require nearly as much investment of time to have significant involvement in a project as research does.

I say this with the caveat, of course, that if you intend to apply MD/PhD or MD/MS, the importance of research experience then becomes much greater than that of any of your other ECs. If this is the case for you, I'd suggest quitting your scribing job altogether to work in a lab full time for a year or two prior to applying.

Would you be scribing for the same specialty as well? If not, then it's fine. Otherwise, I agree with Quimica. Adcom members know that you have to pay your bills and you need to find a job with high enough pay. Since you already have clinical experience, I don't think it would be essential for you to look for something clinical. Just find whatever job and do some clinical volunteering.

Thanks for the responses. It is primarily a money issue. I feel fortunate in that I have had plenty of clinical experiences over the past decade, so I am in no real need to force more onto my application. I will do my best just to find whatever pays best, knowing that adcoms will understand that I need to pay rent! That makes me feel better.
