Repeating Courses with Passing Grades

So it makes perfect since that you can retake a course in which you receive a C- or less, but people on here always talk about retaking courses that you've already passed. I don't understand why a university would let you do this without any penalty, or is it that when people are suggesting to retake certain courses, it's assumed there is a penalty?

When I say penalty, I mean here in UCs, for example, you will get a transcript notation saying "Unapproved Repeat" and the grade/credits will not count for you. I'm sure it'll count for AMCAS, but has anyone here actually retaken a course and received this "unapproved repeat" notation, and applied successfully to medical school?

I'm sure it varies depending on the school. Here's what one college had to say:

[FONT=Times New Roman, Times, serif]1.3. The adviser's approval is required for students to repeat any course previously passed with a C- or better.No approval can be given for repeating a course in which a grade of A or B has already been earned; nor will it be given when: .
[FONT=Times New Roman, Times, serif] 1.3.1. students wish to repeat a lower division course that they have passed with a grade of C- or better after having successfully completed an advanced course dealing with the same subject matter; .
[FONT=Times New Roman, Times, serif] 1.3.2. students wish to repeat a lower level course that they have passed with a C- or better which is a prerequisite for an advanced course that they had already successfully completed; or, .
[FONT=Times New Roman, Times, serif] 1.3.3. students wish to take an introductory course after they have successfully completed an advanced course dealing with similar material. .

I retook a C and on my transcript it says "repeated class not calculated into gpa". It doesn't really matter what your school gpa is though because it counts for amcas and that is really the only gpa schools look at when you are applying.

AMCAS is pretty much the only thing that matters, not school GPA. At my university, you can retake a class twice (I don't know what the policy is for an A). They really just want your money. Also, if you retake, they replace the grades on your transcript, which AMCAS definitely does not do. So yes, it is kind of unfair

Yeah take it anyways and don't worry about how the school added it all up. AMCAS will take care of it.
