Hello,

Last year I failed organic chemistry 1 and that class was 4 credits. However, the college I am attending they changed a few things. All science classes are split into 3 hr lecture and 1 hr lab. Before all science classes used to be 4 credits. I retook organic chemistry last semester and I got an A- lecture and a B+ lab.

I am confused how to average this two grades? The F with 4 credits and the 3+1 grade …..

-Also, Most important does it count as a grade replacement?? :'(

I don’t know why suddenly they did all this changes

Thank you

Hey! So, when you fill out your app, you don't need to average the grades. It'll go like this:

  • You'll put in the Organic chemistry with 4 credits (it'll be counted as a class and lab).
    • You will check the option which says that you retook this class at a later date. If you choose the transcript entry option (I think it's like an extra $50, don't remember), they'll do it.
  • You will put in your Organic chemistry class for 3 credits and your lab for 1 credit
    • Note that this will be two separate classes
  • After you submit your app, your classes will be verified. On the verified app, all 3 classes will show up. However, the 4 credit class which has an F will have 0 credits next to it, whereas the other two classes will have a 3 and 1 for GPA calculation purposes.
tl;dr : Put in all 3 classes. GPA will only count for the higher grades, but schools will see all 3 grades.

Another quick question -
Let's say I want to average this 2 classes
Do I have to calculate all 3 classes ? Or only the lecture part ?

Why do you want to average the classes?

I could be wrong, but I think it's like this:

  • Multiply your grades by the credit value (i.e. 50 x 4, 90 x 3, 85 x 1)
  • Add the totals and divide by 8

Thank you

Your GPA for this class, if you were to calculate it for MD apps/non-grade replacement purposes, would be 1.8. The F counts as 0 points (4 x 0), the A- lecture would be 11.1 points (3.7 x 3), and the B+ lab would be 3.33 (3.33 x 1). 0 + 11.1 + 3.33 = 14.43. 14.43/8 = 1.8.
