Hey y'all

I am composing a letter to a neurosurgeon in my area who I would like to engage as a mentor. He is the only D.O. in my area that was listed on the iLearn AOA site and I did send a message through that system, therefore I'm assuming he is receptive to being a mentor. One thing I know is that I'm not interested in shadowing him. I really just want to engage him as a future colleague; as someone I can talk with about my professional goals and who can give me advice and insight.

I was wondering if anyone else has composed similar messages to doctors (to whom you have never spoken), and if they would provide some insight as to what to include, aside from my resume, of course. I want to make the point that I want to be a menthe, but what else may be important to include?

I apologize if this is vague. Insight is appreciated.

Best,
J Senpai

Just be straightforward and to the point, when it comes to mentors they want honesty and an open conversation. Realize that the neurosurgeon is busy, so try to keep your correspondences limited and brief, but by all means take advantage of this resource in your community. PM me if you have any further questions.

In the iLearn message, I made a point to say "I know that you and your staff are busy" but I'm not certain that he will get the massage. He may not get a notification and it's possible that no one has ever contacted him over that system.

Maybe leave out the massage... It could get a little awkward. 😀

Woot! He got the iLearn message and he's meeting me next week! Very excited to get to know someone as distinguished as him. Thanks, y'all!

Did you pick the president of AOA or something?

What does a mentor provide that SDN can't?

We promise we can change...

Well, he is the first to hold a patent for a particular artificial disk, he's been a NS professor in Florida and he started a spinal institute.

You always say you'll change but you never do!! *slams door*
