thanks jalbs. now im confused. the second years told us to buy everything except.... instead of katzung pharmacology buy lipincott pharm, dont buy clementes, and dont buy probability without equations.

I bought none of those books required for last year and did fine on all blocks averaging about 1 sd above the average last year on all exams. Memorizing the lectures alone you can pass, so in addition to this I followed along with a good review book. For example block one Immuno/general path/MCDB get: hy embryo, hy molecular cell bio, read the general path section from brs or goljan, read the immuno section from Medical Micro & Immuno from Levinson and Jawetz, read the cellular and autonomic nerve physio from Physiology by Costanzo (the one required text that I did buy) and you should be fine. For the little anatomy you'll get first block again make sure you know the lecture material and supplement with a good atlas. I personally perfered grants for learning relationships and rohen's for how things are supposed to look. In anatomy lab there will already be a clemente atlas and dissector at each table and clemente himself will be teaching during lab. Also when clemente lectures he gives out very detailed notes, so why buy the book when the man himself is there to explain things to you. Then as blocks progress memorize the lectures and follow along accordingly with a recommended review book for each subject from the back of first aid. And one more thing I found HY histo to be really good and used it all year long as we went threw the specific organs and tissue.

in general, i feel that u shouldn't get biochem books....they just aren't worth it.

Although I'm not from your school, I would recommend NOT buying Katzung and Trevor. I bought baby katzung (~500 pages I think), and I read about two pages total. Lippincott is the way to go with pharm. I also bought the Lippincott pharm cards and annotated them with lots of information when I took pharm.

I actually like Clemente though. I think Clemente is a million times better than Netters (the blood supply diagrams in Clemente kicks Netters ass). However, I didn't know Clemente existed when I took anatomy so I never bought it.

I actually am from the OPs school and I also bought the "baby" katzung review book and never opened it or any pharm book during my first year. Knowing the lectures cold was good enough. But I do plan on reading the katzung pharm review book during second year since this is when our school will give us the bulk of our Pharm. Like efex said there just isn't enough time to know the lectures and do all the reading they assign.

This is just my experience from my school, but most textbooks that are "required" are way overkill. I used the approach of buying the books that will be good for my reference library (Robbins, Netters, Moore, Harrison's (or Cecil), and then supplementing the rest with smaller review books (Checkerboard, etc). I spent the bulk of my time pouring over the lecture notes, and trying to get the big picture with checkerboard or Lippincot's or Micro made ridiculously simple etc. Seemed to work best for me on my limited budget.

I good strategy is to start with very few books per semester and use the library to check out books your school suggests. If you are finding the book very useful you can then shell out the cash. The library supplied most of my books my first three years.
