please help!
I been out of school for several years. Therefore, trying to get all the requirement for my applicant is very hard . My question is does anyone having a hard time trying to get a recommedation. I know that apply to a DO school they need a DO recommendation, but I really don't know any DO. If anyone ever in a situation like me, how do you go about to get a recommendation from a Do. please help.
thank you

find a nearby hospital's website.

go to the "find a doctor" selection.

select "family physician" as the specialty and run the search.

You will most likely find D.O.s listed. Now start cold-calling.

👍

It's what I did, and you will be amazed at how NICE D.O.s are about letting people shadow.

Hi!
You can look for Osteopathic physicians and ask for recommendation. Usually, they will ask you to volunteer at their office for a while to know who you are and then write you a recommend letter. Hope it helps. 🙂

It took me a long time to finally find a D.O. who was willing to have me shadow them. Even my counselor tried calling D.O.s for me with no luck. Once I found a D.O., getting the letter of recommendation was easy. He was very cooperative and I enjoyed my time shadowing him. The experience made me appreciate osteopathic medicine even more.

Have you looked through the phonebook yet to see if there are any D.O.'s in your area? You can also trying searching on the internet for a list of D.O.s as well.

Yeah sometimes its hard to get Recommendation from a DO. Actually I tried to call as many DOs I can but wasn't lucky enough. So then decided to shadow an MD. Actually only few schools have strict DO letter requirement so if you can't find one, find MD and you will be fine. I didn't apply to the schools with strict DO requirement.

Moreover you are out of school but you must be working right ? Get one letter from your employer. I did the same.

Yeah you have to find one of your old professors to write a letter for you. Some are really nice and they won't mind writing a recommendation for you. So then you will have three letters.

I've actually had the opposite problem. Finding a D.O. to shadow was easy - one shot, one kill. Now the M.D.s are another story. The one that had agreed to let me shadow him has now reneged.

It's just never easy, is it folks? 🙁

You can apply to schools that do not require DO letters as well. I did that, and I have 2 acceptances so far. Try to find DO first, but if it doesn't work out do what I did.

i was short on time....
so i did a web search for DOs in my area. Selected 5 from the list. Wrote them all a letter explaining my interest in osteopathic medicine, and asked to meet them to get a letter of rec and to shadow for a few hours when possible. I got three responses back, and actually ended up meeting with two of them--also got to see OMT! Got letters from both of them, and my premed prof told me to include both of them in my letter file since the letters were short.

of course, i prepared a packed with my transcripts, PS, and resume to give them more information to help with writing my letter. If they said "Yes", then I gave them the packet.

I tried to meet with a specialist and a primary care physician to get a perspective on their experience a an osteopathic physician. Also asked them for any tips or words of wisdom.

I have had much more luck setting up shadowing/volunteering in a hospital setting. The hospital then takes care of HIPAA and the physician isn't going to have to worry about that. If you are having trouble, try contacting local hospitals to see what programs they have. I was able to set up shadowing in the ED this way and since they knew my objective was to have physician exposure I was appointed to simply be an extra set of hands to do what the physician said to do and get things they needed. I have really enjoyed my volunteer experience, I hope you can find something equally rewarding.
