My friend just did this. He started driving the day before the interview date to the medical school (5 hour drive). While he was driving, he got stuck in a BAD snowstorm, witnessed three car accidents and lost control of the car. So he decided to reschedule his interview.

I think it was a bad move. Is a bad, bad snowstorm that can possibly endanger your life a valid excuse for rescheduling? How would the Adcom view this?

What's the take-home message here? Plan to get to the interview place at least 2 days prior to the interview?

Your friend probably should have checked out the weather report before traveling imo.

ummm of course, this is one of the few valid reasons to reschedule.. really, risk dying and risk getting into 1 medical school.. or live?
I'd pick LIVE.

umm, holy ****... do you have a trust fund or something? my bank account hit $0 during the interview trail from all the traveling, and I only flew to 2 interviews.

Ha yes it's totally fine to reschedule. Schools understand weather related problems especially snow. In terms of going to a snowy school, if the weather is getting worse get there at least a day before your interview, may 2 depending on how bad the conditions are.

I rescheduled to party on a Sunday - didn't want to wake up hungover for my flight on Monday. Hopkins probably waitlisted me for it.

hahahaah no i don't have a trust fund. Well, you sound like you've had multiple interviews. but that was the first (highly likely last) interview for my friend! If this was my first (possibly last) interview and I really wanted to go to this school, I would do everything to get there no matter what. And, he rescheduled the day of his interview.

And, his interview was only 5 hours away and he started out the day before! I just think he would have made it there fine if he had planned his trip out earlier...

Plus, what about other interviewees that made it there? What about the interviewer themselves who had to drive in a bad weather? Wouldn't rescheduling reflect your lack of interest in attending the school and your ability to prepare ahead and deal with problems?

I am just a little concerned for my friend. lol

If you're not willing to put your life on the line to get to the med school interview, maybe you're just not a good match and don't deserve to go to that med school. 👍

I personally think that people should just learn to drive better in the snow and to please clear the left lane for those of us who do know how...

...just as a general life rule, and nothing to do with interviews.

Dying would seem to decrease your chances of an acceptance significantly as well... which seems like a highly likely possibility if it was bad enough that he completely lost control of the car at one point.

Sucks that nature decided to screw him, but if it's a 5 hour drive, planning to leave the day before the interview seems totally reasonable to me; what was he going to do otherwise, chill for a day in his interview city doing nothing while he gets further behind in his classes?
