Hi,

When I applied to MD programs this cycle, I was on track to graduate my masters program in the Spring of 2020. Fortunately, I was admitted to medical school next year!

Prior to applying, I had to do some course finagling with my academic advisor. He had put together a "tentative schedule" that would enable me to graduate in spring 2020. This schedule was dependent on course availability and enrollment. I had to apply to sub some courses in for some requirements, but that was approved. However, despite all of the courses we decided on being available, my academic advisor unfortunately decided to rescind on his decision to allow me to take the courses, with no cause. Unfortunately, that means I won't be able to complete the program before matriculation to medical school.

Do you feel like this situation would cause the medical schools that accepted me to rescind my acceptance? Otherwise, do you feel like this is cause enough to request a deferral?

Thanks in advance.

Was this masters degree listed on AMCAS? If so, then you will need to provide proof of degree conferral before matriculation to medical school. You should notify the schools you have acceptance to and request deferrals. Only the schools that grant you a deferral will be ones that you can now choose from.

I'm in a similar situation but I never listed the degree on AMCAS. I did mention it briefly in my secondary. Will I get into trouble with an acceptance if I withdraw?

Withdraw from what? A master's degree program?

If you mentioned it in a secondary, then I believe you're degree would still be contingent on it and you should ask the admissions office for guidance. If the school you're accepted to was never told of your gap year plans, then I suppose it wouldn't matter.

Thanks for your reply!! I definitely don’t mind deferring; I’m worried that schools will rescind my acceptances because it was contingent on my degree....

That will be up to the school. It's best to be as honest and upfront as possible, since if you leave it to the last minute they may rescind your acceptance, whereas if you tell them up front then maybe there is something else they will have you complete in lieu of the degree. Or they may let you defer. In any event, you'll have to tell them, and see what they say.

How do you know your acceptance was contigent on your Masters? Ive heard of ppl leaving Master's programs to go to med school. All you need is a bachelors- like I have my Biology bachelor's but am taking two classes to finish Bioinfo. If I , for whatever reason, don't finish this degree, I still would be awarded my BS-Biology. Is that an issue? ( sorry to derail this thread just made me nervous AF)

If you listed your degree on AMCAS, you included it in your application, and by extension, most medical schools would consider their acceptance contingent on you receiving that degree. This is mostly for people who are currently in Masters/PhD programs and don't finish by the time they would have started medical school - this is not an acceptable reason for a deferral and would be grounds for your acceptance being rescinded, as you told them you would have a Masters/PhD by matriculation.

You should be aiming to finish all the degrees you listed on AMCAS, as a medical school may consider their acceptance contingent on those degrees much like it would obviously be contingent on a bachelors, as you provided the information for them to consider and the fact that you were pursuing a Masters almost certainly played into their decision.

Contact the school and ask....
you may need a letter of explanation

BTW this is why I do not recommend applying why actively enrolled in a masters

I thought another possible component of not applying while in a Masters or SMP is that it can take away from studying for the MCAT and preparing the application as well - I remember there being some oft-cited number that the majority of people who take the MCAT while in an SMP don't do well (but I may be misremembering or mixing things up)?

But, if they didn't list my acceptance as contigent on my Bioinfo degree , and would have considered me with just a biology degree, would that be okay? Its an off chance I'm just speculating. Its pretty clear I would already have the Bio degree bc I have all my Bio degree classes , and Im just in computing and calc.
I know a friend who had her BS changed from Biotech-> Biology last min. I don't think it made a difference. My pt. is I dont think not having master's vs having a bachelor's but just failing to upgrade it is the same thing. Obviously you would have to ask the school.
Ntm worst case scenario I could take another class S20 bc Im planning to be done in Dec.
I think OP will be fine after calling and telling the school- please update us , OP.

If you report a degree in progress with an intention of it "to-be-completed" they are likely considering you in that fashion.
"oh this m1 next year will be coming in with their m.s. in x or mph or xyz degree/cert thats a cool degree/perspective he can add to the class that we dont have many of"

is bioinfo a masters or just your BS/BA? If its a masters degree, they wont list it as contingent to your acceptance on paper but since you said you will have this degree with "expected graduation/reception of degree" on amcas, its you telling them i expect to have it so consider me as if i have this degree coming in next year. If its your BS it doesnt matter what your degree is or even if you change it but I would still let them know

It is my BS. I could have the Biology BS in May, but chose to take two more classes and change it to Bioinf for Dec. Just two more classes- Computing II and Calc II (not a pre req for my application I already have a year of math including stats).
Thats my pt- its not an extra degree its just a slight upgrade to the BS i could have already had.

I really hope OP is fine. I would loathe a backup plan interfering with my actual plans.

From my sdn experience schools dont care if its a bachelors in bio bioinf music or art they just want to see a bachelors so youre qualified to get in. No real “upgrades” to the bs are worth it if it will sink your gpa come update time unless its something youre passionate/interested in

I meamsince I have 122 credits these 8 creds will hardly make a difference. And they arent sci GPA except for Calc for MD schools but I think I can do fine there. Computing is not sci GPA for either.
So I would be good, in your opinion? Thanks.

Yeah youre fine imo!

Medical school acceptance agreements often are worded that current academic pursuits must be completed. They dont care about the major change in UG
But that would be that I dont "technically" finish my Bioinfo BS, just my Biology BS. A BS is a BS but still...
I really think OP would be fine it was the advisor flipping on them not that they flunked a class.

Yes youre fine.

OP would not be completing his masters prior to matricuation, something he listed as "expected" by the time he arrives to xyz med school!

What is so hard about the concept of calling them and asking???

Well bc right now it looks like I'll finish, I'm just speculating on an anonymous internet thread. Also I really hope OP is fine in the end- this is a really crappy situation to be in.

OP here- for anyone searching in the future, the medical school allowed to finish the degree in the summer, which was great.

Thanks for reporting back! It always helps future applicants who might have the same question.
