Research and the application

who here in the application pool has strong research experience? and by that i mean at least a journal publication and a few abstracts. Also how will this help you in the application process and does it help afterwards when you apply for dental specialty?

I don't know for sure. I have a publication and have presented a three professional meetings but, my research is chemistry-related so, I don't think that will make a big difference when applying to dental school/specialty programs. I haven't even been asked about my research at any of my interviews... in fact, I don't think my interviewers had enough background info to really know what I'm doing, unfortunately. It might be a different story if my research was dentistry-related. If anything, I think that research shows that you are self-motivated, can work independently and use critical-thinking. It also shows a breadth of experience/well-roundedness. But honestly, I don't think it will be a determining factor.

i have about a year of research experience. no publications, but i can only imagine that the experience will help out my dschool application. i doubt it will affect getting into a residency/specialty afterwards though.

kinda like....does the stuff you did in high school help getting into dschool? prolly not...

I really think research can set you apart from other applicants. I have been published three times and each study dealt with patient volunteers. I know this has helped me get looks that other utah kids don't get.

I would recommend getting involved with any research you can.🙂

research can only help, especially if it is dental/oral related.

currently doing research for a dental related subject, hopefully that gets some eyeball from the adcomms.
