Is there any added benefit to doing research over the summer at a medical school/hospital compared with at a research organization in regards to networking for your residency? Would it show your interest in that institution or geographic area for the future?

The specific locations are not so important as much as who the person you are working with knows. At least if you're interested in "networking".
