I took Marketing Research where we had to design, gain approval, implement, and analyze the results of a research problem we choose as a group of 5. Even though this is not the traditional scientific research you list on AADSAS, can't I still count it as research and put that I got academic credit for it? Does it really matter if I used surveys and tested business theories and not scientific theories and used a test tube or a microscope? it's still legit research isn't it?

😕

Definitely put it down, it shows that you are at least doing something. Almost any kind of EC you put down will make you look better (prostitution included)

Hm...if that was a class project, then I'm sorry, but it's a no. Unless you went with it beyond the class and continued with the project. I took some graduate level science classes where you had to have a research project over the whole semester (even publishable work!) and even that is not applicable...I even think I saw disclamer of that sort in ADSAS...i could be just makin that up though...anyone else?

i tried asking AADSAS but they said if it's applicable and I asked how can I tell and he just repeated himself in a more stern tone. I think it's applicable because it's research but it's not the type they usually get like for in science labs.

Also, it was for a class for the semester but we had to get the board to approve it and we actually did conduct surveys and used software to analyze our data so we coudl use the statiscal tests to support/disproe and explain our theories and thesis. It was very business oriented though...our company was Apple Inc. and the product was iTunes...

pleaseee tell me it counts 😳
I have no other reserach so would be thirlled if I can include it...I think I can?😕

I am still inclining for no...sorry, i really wish u could. but it's just not what you put. it's either a summer research program they want or a research assistantship of some sort. at the very least an independent study...but this was a mock study for a class *unless u really worked as a marketing team for apple*, which is definatelly a no. what are your other stats?

🙁 aww no

BUT WAIT what's the worst that can happen if I list it?
1) they think i'm silly 😳
2) they think i'm dumb for thinking it's accepatable as their reserach req 🙁
3) they think i'm really desperate to impress them but at least applaud my efforts and see i try oh so hard cuz i realllyyy wanna be a dentist from their school? 😀

best case: they accept it and excited to read about a totally different type of research experience😍

which option is right?

still don't know if i can list it...some schools have said yes when i emailed them others say its up to me but typically talk about science research. point is i gotta fill out the same thing for both of them!

bottom line is it's a MOCK class project in a research class...so it's a No. Pretend research is not real research.

Let me put it in a perspective: if I had an immunology class and the project was to come up with a mock vaccine for the evolved bird flu, there is no way I could put it!

If it is part of a class project then No, you can't count it as research. If this class was something like Independent study where you conducted research for a professor and worked with a few other students, then it would count.

Typically research is conducted with thinking outside of the box, with no limitations. Since this was a part of a class project and you did what was required of you then it shouldn't count. If you ran with this project once the class was over, then you might be able to count it.

but I would say, No.

but it wasn't a mock project though. We had to get approval from the review board at school and we actually sent out surverys to real ppl who replied and we actually used Apple's current info and learned statistical software to anzalyze and present our data with. so it wasn't like coming up with a mock vaccine. you are right though we didn't present it to apple or anything so other then our knowlege on conducting research and informing our classmates and professors and the participants no one else really benefited. I know it's a stertch but I just feel compelled to add it since we did collect data and analyze and have to get approval on our research and survey by the real board so to be able to survey and talk to people.

i don't care if adcoms don't see it as the best research ever i am just trying to show them that i have done research about something even though it wasn't science and that i didn't just read about research. that's all is that too much of a stretch? i just dont' want them to think i'm dumb or desperate for putting this 😕

sorry if i'm dragging this out i guess i realize how much work i did and feel compelled to show them too 😳 but it was our work so it makes sense why i'm more attached to it and that's why i'm asking you guys if it sounds legit to someoen who is not biased for it like me?

anyone else list oddball research and get a positive response? or did everyone that listed research have the lab based type we think of as research first.

i guess i still dunno if i want to my reserach and if i can't even convince u guys then how will the adcoms believe me too?

Don't put it if it was for a class, I misread your origonal post.. that isnt exactly an EC if you are doing it for a class. I wouldnt put it down.

In my experience of applying, only 2 schools really consider research experience - Columbia and Harvard. And the reason why they consider it is because they think it might incline you to pursue laboratory research projects while you're in dental school, and even pursue academic dentistry. Other dental schools don't really put that much emphasis on your research experience - if you have some, then great - if you don't, it doesn't matter that much.

Btw, when schools are looking for research experience, they're looking at substantial and meaningful experience. Washing dishes don't really count ... doing menial benchwork for a semester doesn't really count either.

Doing marketing research for a class? It doesn't really fall into any category - EC, no ... research, no ...

It's completely not what they want, but you can put down whatever you want. It's your application.

When they list research, they have in mind biomedical research. They want to know whether you have the skills they look for within their labs. Whether you're a potential candidate and could pursue research in the future. If you put it down, it draws attention to your application. They're not likely to look down on you because of it. They're likely to remember your application at a later time (which helps when it comes to waitlist situation, etc.)

It WON'T give you an upperhand as far as qualifications are concerned. It doesn't make you more qualified than the next guy who doesn't have biomedical research experience. It just makes you more memorable. (so be brief on your application. an elaborate explanation of your project is not necessary, cuz it doesn't fit their goals)
