Does anyone know where I can find a primer into research positions and the application process for an MD looking to pursue a research oriented career (non-clinical)?

Well, to start, it would help if we knew what kind of background you have. If you have a PhD in molecular biology, you're in a much different situation than if you've never set foot in a lab at all. Also, what is it exactly that you're looking to do for a career? Are you fine with being a staff scientist in someone else's group, or do you want to acquire the skills you'd need to be the PI of your own lab some day? Do you see yourself working in academia or industry?
