I was wondering how to properly cite my publication within AMCAS? I have it as its own activity but don't know how much citation information to put in the description. My pre-med advisor recommended I put the DOI number in the citation description, but that seems a little excessive to me, seeing it's just a long strand of random numbers and letters. I couldn't find anything with a quick search about DOI numbers in the citation.

If your publication is cataloged by Pubmed, PMID seems to be the reference of choice among the SDN users with publications.

If you have 1 publication, the full formal citation should fit in the narrative box. For examples if you need them: http://content.easybib.com/citation-guides/mla-format/how-to-cite-a-journal-mla/#.U7WdmPldWag

One more question regarding publications that I can't seem to find anywhere. In the AMCAS Instruction Manual, it says that you may list 0 total hours for publications entries. Do most people list 0 hours for the publication description entry and then put all the hours under a separate entry where they discuss their research?

Yes, 0 or 1 is most common.
