Hi Everyone,

I'm new to the forum and was wondering if you guys had any insight on this.

I work in the ICU at a large metropolitan hospital. I am switching careers and hoping to be accepted to Vet Med this year. In the ICU there are several practitioners who split their time between clinic and research. For example, some doctors will work in the ICU for two weeks, and then spend two weeks doing research, flipping between this schedule all year long. Is this unheard of in vet medicine? I'd love to combine my two loves (research & animal med), but Im not sure I have ever heard of a veterinrian with this type schedule? Any feedback would be great!!!! 🙂

It's very common for veterinarians in academic programs (veterinary schools). Many of these positions involve hospital duty for 1/2 time and the rest of the time divided between teaching and research.

We need more veterinarians in academics so go for it.

Thank you so much for the reply!

One last question, is it necessary to hold a PhD on top of your DVM for positions at an academic institute? (I hold an MSc).

Thanks for all the help!

You usually need something beyond a DVM, usually board certification and/or PhD.

Sounds like every clinician/professor at our school 🙂 Academia allows a lot of leeway....some clinic work, some research, some teaching, all mixed up and in various concentrations (which can be either good or terribly unorganized, but that depends on the person)
