I was wondering whether or not I should include research that I did as clinical experience. It was an animal study performed to find a drug that will possibly help people with metabolic syndrome. opinions?

clinical experience = working with human patients, not an animal drug study

possibly clinical research working with people (sleep studies, diet studies etc.) can count. but I would advise double checking with AACOMAS or any specific D.O. schools.

what the OP described is most likely laboratory research...like Kuba said, if there is no direct human patient interaction, then it is not clinical research.

Working with animals are not clinical experience. If you were studying human subjects, it is clincal work.
