I am really passionate about health care policyand so Iapplied for MD/MPH at many schools. I am condsidering DO schools especially programs with DO/PhD or DO/Mph. My career goals are to open a primary practice (peds or internal med) and be an epidemiologist for AIDS research (maybe open a lab? policy center?). Would a DO degree allow me to accomplish these things?

Coupled with an Mph or a PhD? Absolutely.

Remember though - in the field of science a Master's degree doesn't go NEARLY as far as a PhD (based on my experience). That being said, I don't know how this will be affected by obtaining a DO degree as well. You had best research this 👍

NSU has a dual DO/MPH program, as well ... you can actually get the MPH for free as part of the DO program.

I have a master's in Epidemiology and a PhD is a must for running your own research. Since you are wanting to open a lab you will need this degree in order to compete for research money. Although a M.S. will provide you with good experience...a PhD is much better when it comes to writing grant proposals, papers, etc.

I can tell you that a Ph.D. is not a requirement for running your own Research... I'm sure it helps though.

I work at research-oriented Medical School (MD) and I have several PIs, only 2 of them have PhDs. You might have access to more funding as a DO/PhD (not sure), but it is definitely possible to perform reseach with just your DO or MD.

I am debating about the same thing myself. I got in TCOM and am interested in the DO/MPH just let me tell you a little secret. If you are an out of state student you are going to have to pay extra for the degree. If you are looking at getting it there are a few options. Getting it concurently which will be stressful, but doable, (I just spoke with one of the TCOM 4th year DO/MPH students today). I was fortunate to be accepted at NSU also they are the only osteopathic school that will pay for your MPH degree as in they give you a scholarship. This would be a good plan for you if you want to do it concurently. Otherwise do it during your residency because they will pay for it then too plus you will appreciate the information that much more because you already finished med school. There is one more option you can do it after residency some job positions will pay for and or let you take the time off to pursue the degree. All I'm saying is way out your options. I know I am definetly getting an MPH along with my medical degree but its just a matter of when. Doing it at the same time as my medical degree and having to pay additionally for it probably isn't as good of an idea as what I stated above.
