I did clinical research for a year (part-time) on a clinical trial where we tried different dosings of enoxaparin in trauma patients to see if PE's occurred less. It was an amazing experience and really helped me see how amazing medicine could be. But here I am now with 3 kids and I just imagine life will be super busy for me that I want to spend time with my fam during the summer break. Would doing research as a rotation be as effective because I still want to play around with the idea of doing gen surg. in a place I want to live or specializing where having research might be the "icing on the cake" for residency applications. Ideas?

You can do research electives, at least you could at my school. The problem is that research usually takes awhile and 1 month is not enough to get anything done. If you worked on a research project throughout the year during your free time and then used your elective to finish the project that would be feasible.

Thanks - when you say on your free time like how many hours a week usually? Assuming most research projects require similar amounts of work- I just want to see if doing research is going to be realistic since me and my wife are both going to school at the same time.

It really depends on what you're doing. If you are in a lab, you will probably have to go to the lab a couple times a week for a few hours or maybe everyday. If you are working on some clinical research you might be able to do it from home and it might only be a few hours each week. If you do smaller projects, like review articles or case reports/series, you can write them up over the course of a few weekends. It really just depends on what kind of research you end up doing.
