Yeah everyone in the bio class have to do it but everything is done on your own outside of class. I also signed up a 2 credit 2 semester class to focus more time on this where we get help from faculty mentors. I plan on this being my only research experience since I do not enjoy it too much. So it is 2 semesters long and I also have to present the project at the end. Is this the prototypical exp most premeds go through with the difference being that I'm given this oppurtunity rather than seeking it out by myself?
Premeds gain experience for class credit, as a volunteer, or because they're paid to do it, but no matter how acquired, it is still listed under Research on the application.
An academic year of research seems to be about average among those who list it.

I'd say that's less involved than what many people have done (posters, talks, publications, etc) but more involved than what some people do (wash glassware, prepare samples, no data analysis or interpretation).
