As of now , I will be at SDSU in the fall and will have about 1000hrs of SA clinic experience by summer. I would like to get involved in a research program for the summer.

How did you guys/girls go about finding available programs?

Most professors have research interests listed on their web page. You can start emailing around and asking about project that you could get involved in. Be sure to add a sentence like, "If you are not currently accepting student help for your research projects, do you know of anyone with similar interest nearby who is looking for student assistants?" Attach a resume if you have one. If you don't have a resume be sure to mention major experiences like

Small Animal Vet Assistant--1000 hours
Description of what you did here

Also list any relevant coursework.

At some colleges they have lists in the department head's office of research projects.

At my school the biology department has an e-mail list for lab openings. Usually it's just cleaning glassware.

I found my research spot through a TA, I was rather lucky and had the job offered to me -- since I was especially interested in the stuff we were learning he thought it'd be a good match, and it was!

You can also ask your TAs and Profs if they have or know of any spots open.

I had a hard time finding a spot just by e-mailing or asking, it's much easier if you know someone. So if you know anyone in research ask them first....

I like physiology a lot, and I had a great physiology professor for a class, so one day after lecture was over I literally just went up to him and asked him if he had an open position for an undergraduate researcher. I would suggest, if there is a professor whose subject matter you really like, that you visit them during their office hours, ask them about their research track, and let them know that you are interested in what they're doing.

Most professors, even if they don't have room for you right then, will be excited to find an undergraduate that is interested in doing research, especially in their field.
