Research Fellowship Concern

Is it possible to get into trouble if you obtain a research fellowship and end up doing a different project than you proposed? That has the potential to happen in my case, but I'm really not certain.

Usually it isn't a big deal but obviously it depends on the fellowship. For example, I did a year off based on a fMRI proposal investigating hemorrhage and ended up doing aneurysm genetics. They didn't care.

If this is something like Sarnoff (specificially cardiovascular) and you end up on a project focused on cartilage regeneration, yes it could be a problem. It will probably only be a problem if the fellowship has specific guidelines for the area of research..

The fellowship seems general; I got a random e-mail from the Chemistry department student services at my undergraduate institution asking to apply for it. The new and propsed study are both under the umbrella of cardiac hypertrophy. I'm submitting a proposal on metabolic effects of cardiac biomechanical stretch, but may switch to studying the pathways involved in cardiac hypertrophy caused by the knockout of a ubiquitin ligase.

Gotcha, yeah it's always safe to check in with the powers that be, but IMO you're fine. Research findings change sometimes and you gotta roll with the waves that science sends you. Good luck!
