I am looking into switching into ophtho from another specialty. What are some of the best and most welcoming programs to do research fellowships at?

I see UMich has one, and of course Wills and Bascom Palmer are good places. But I imagine those are difficult places to match at.

Has anyone done a research year (years) at a program and matched there?

I have good board scores (250+) from a top 10 medical school and research/publications in other fields.

Thanks!

You actually may not have to go through all that. I would go to the SFmatch website and look for vacant PGY-2 spots that open up when someone leaves a program. This is of course assuming you have already done an intern year in medicine/surgery/peds.

Yah agreed. If you have no restrictions about which program you want to match into then taking a year off is probably not necessary. If you must be in NY or LA or Boston you probably should email the chair and ask about employment opportunities in the department.

I have looked into those spots and they seem hard to get. I'm sure they have a ton of people applying. I have pretty much 0 background in ophtho. So I think having connections is helpful.

Actually I think when programs have vacant spots, they are usually worried that they won't get any strong applicants. Sounds like you have great numbers, come from a top 10 med school, which will all work in your favor. I think there is no harm in trying. At the same time, doing a research fellowship could indicate your strong interest in the field so that could also be helpful.
