Research gap year options

For those of you guys doing a research gap year, are you all doing pre-residency fellowships? I looked at a few academic programs that offer these but it seems that there is an extensive selection process and getting one of the fellowships is pretty tough. What other options for research are out there?

I'm not doing a pre-residency research year, but I think setting something up with someone in your your home program, or another program, is a reasonable option too.
