Okay, I'm a newbie....(MS1). I worked for three years in the ER and I know that there is tons of fun research to be done in there. However, I was wondering if there is a specific journal that I could read to get my creative juices flowing to get some ideas for a fun research projects in EM I could do over my summer between the 1st and 2od years. Nothing to complex, just to get my feet wet in clinical research.

SAEM is goign to be your more academic research.

ACEP journal is more 'practical' stuff.

I would recommend contacting some EM people at your school or wherever you are goign to be and see if you can work wtih someone else. Lone research for the very first time, with no guidance will be tough.

I am looking around for someone experienced and involved in 'practical' research in the area (they should also be willing to deal with me 😀 ). I've done virology research before (molecbio), just nothing "clinical" and feel that I would be interested in doing some research in that direction... however, if something more "academic" peaks my interest, I won't just throw it away. I want to approach the PI with something simple enough for me to accomplish and be well organized. Hopefully the PI will be involved with 'practical' research and perhaps I can do a spin-off project from whatever s/he is doing. Anyhow, I need to read the Journals and I figured youz guyz in the residents forums would know what is going on. So, I really appreciate the guidance!

That journal out of UCSD (Journal of EM? I forget) publishes a lot of clinical stuff and case studies... also, it's much easier to publish there than AEM or Annals... I've heard the new editor at Annals of EM is generally unhappy with the number of softer studies published and iis looking to clean up the journal a lot and I expect it to get a harder to publish there...

I agree with the previous advice. Having an active, supportive advisor is key.

Check out Emory's Emergency Medicine Research Center. They take med students over the summer and when I worked there a few years ago they were doing research in injury prevention, traumatic brain injury, EMS, and infectious disease.
