I have read quite a few posts about doing research while you are in dental school because, incase you want to specialize, this is going to be important.
I just have a few questions about this topic. I hope some of you could answer for me.

1. How do you find out which schools have more research opportunities and which have less??

2. UOP is a 3 yr program. People say that specializing after UOP is hard mostly because you don't get to do research. Is this because they have very few (or none) research opportunities or because they are 3 yr program they cram a lot of work together so possibility of finding research time is close to nothing. On the same note --- i read in a few posts that in dental schools you can do research during summer because --i am guessing you wont have classes during summer.---Does UOP have mandatory classes in summer as well?? I have heard they have a pretty rigorous program.

3. also i read somewhere that a good time to begin research is the summer before D1 starts. Is that true? if so then when do you start applying? what if you dont know which school you are accepted to yet?

4. I didn't get the chance to do research as an undergrad. Do they factor that in for considering you for a research position in dental school?

Thanks for your help 🙂

They talked about this at my Baylor interview. You can do research the summer before d-school if you want. The other big research opportunity is the summer between 1st and 2nd year because you have it off. They acted like it wasn't really competitive. They seemed to want to give students the opportunity to participate if they were interested and had the time.

That's Baylor and other schools may be different. You may learn more about it during interviews and you'll have plenty of time to ask questions then.

Yes, Pacific has year round classes. I don't know where this idea comes from that it's impossible to specialize from Pacific. Historically ~15-20% of each class specializes (Not including GPR/AEGD) and that's above average nationally.

As far as research, whatever information you found is patently false. Not only are student research opportunities abundant at Pacific, many students find time to take part. I myself will have at least one publication in a highly reputable journal that I worked on solely while in dental school, and I have another unrelated project that will bear fruit right around my graduation.

I really have no idea where all this is coming from.
