Just wondering if anyone is doing research in physiology? I'm currently taking a vertebrate physiology course (teaching out of Guyton's Medical Physiology) and I think I'm in love. Initially my research interests were in the toxicology/cancer biology interface, but I was wondering what type of research is going in physiology. I'm sure there is a great bit of molecular stuff going on. Are there opportunities for good research in more systems/integrative physiology?

mmc48, I am in a "molecular physiology and biophysics" dept. So I guess technically I am doing physiology research. I see it as more molecular in nature. Let me know if you have any questions and I will see what I can do to help.

I finished my thesis in Molecular & integrative / systems biology; it was an awesome experience - part imaging, part informatics, part molecular biology - several very interesting projects. Got a bunch of papers, really front-line (in my humble opinion) integrative research, merging several fields with multiple collaborations. The field is really re-inventing itself from its steady historical foundation. Still hard to convince top journals to take my stuff (uphill battle ), but otherwise I'd really recommend it!

I will likely be pursuing an MD/PhD at the University of Mississippi Medical School starting next fall, probably doing the PhD in physiology. Interesting that you're using Guyton's book. He was at the medical center here for almost fifty years, and the co-author (Hall) is currently the chair of the physiology department.
