I highly suggest finding a research opportunity while in podiatry school. There is a great need for research in Podiatric medicine, and the sooner you begin to learn about the steps involved in conducting research, the better prepared you will be during residency. Those that may not know there is a section for 'research-experience' when applying for residency, and besides learning something new, the experience can help your CV for the match.
The simplest way to get involved would be talking to current professors and asking for an opportunity. It doesn't have to be podiatry-related; it can be in the sciences, as long as you are learning about the steps involved in producing evidence-based medicine papers and conducting research. As you get to years 3 and 4, you can get picky and do something related to your fav topic in Pod medicine. Another way would be to become a member of research-specific clubs on campus or asking 3rd and 4th years about becoming part of their research projects. Many programs have mandatory research year where a junior or senior presents a poster through ACFAS, ask around and get involved.
You want to learn everything being taught well and have a high GPA (for boards and match), but if you can do anything else besides school-work, then get involved with the research. It will help you and everyone else in this field. I'll post a few links below but lmk if you have any specific questions.

Emphasizing The Importance Of Research To Podiatric Residents
After recently attending the American College of Foot and Ankle Surgery (ACFAS) Annual Scientific Conference, I feel the topic of research is relevant to discuss.
