In the boxes where they ask you for your primary research interest(s) in the secondaries, how specific should it be? We already check-marked general subjects on AMCAS.

Rule #1: Make sure that the research interest you check is something that exists at that school and there are people doing research in that field that you actually will be willing to work with.

This information is going to come up in an interview.

The interviewer will say: "So, John, I see that you have indicated an interest in systems biology. Do you know a particular faculty member that you would like to work with in systems biology?"

That's if they are nice. A meaner, difficult question could come as follows: "So, John, you checked biophysics as one of your interests. We do not have very many biophysicists at this school. Why would you want to come here?"

So just be very careful, it is something that can be read right off your application without too much effort. You will get asked about it.
