I've been told that research is not necessary unless you want to get accepted at a top 20 school. However, on the MSAR, in the section that shows percentage of accepted applicants with research/lab experience, the lowest number I've seen in 79%. These numbers seem to show that research is necessary at every allopathic school. Can anyone explain why these numbers are so high even though research is supposedly not necessary for acceptance at some of these schools?

A lot of people applying to medical school and getting in have research experience. That's what it means. It's not necessary, but it's a good skillset to have and a good experience to have on your app.

Research is not necessary for most schools (the top tiers require it). The statistics are inflated because people overstate and miscategorize lab maintenace as research.

The top tiers don't actually require it, but it is rare that you'll find a top tier student with 0 research experience at all.
