So, it's been brought to my attention that my lab might be moving far away from campus to a satellite campus we have. I have only a year of basic research there (genetic cloning). I was really hoping to start my own project this year (the PI told me I would), but if they're moving so far away, I won't be able to get there. Nothing's official quite yet, but they have been talking about this all summer. When it does become official, I'm going to try to get into another lab. My question is, would just this one year of basic research hinder my application to top schools? I don't want to be selling myself short.

It's not about the length of time, it's about what you did and what you learned from the experience. Some people don't do any research and some have maybe a summer or so. If research isn't for you, don't force it.
