Research opportunities at Nova
Started by MLT1234
i want to know about this too!!
When I was there, I had the chance to ask this question to the interviewers and the students. The response was that there are some, very few students who does some research as a part time opportunity, but more than 90% of the students just stick with the curriculum.
If you attend Nova, most likely you won't be doing much of research since that's just not their focus.

agree with teamguo. when i asked, they said its available, but its not stressed/encouraged in the curriculum and few, if any, students conduct it seriously.

👍
so you can do research, but they don't "encourage" it?
perhaps i had wrong choice of words. they'll "encourage" you to do research, if you're inclined to do so. but research itself is not popular among dental students there, and is not known to have a big presence in the dental school, (or perhaps on the campus for that matter?). but it is there, not sure how well funded they are. i'm most likely going to try to do something.

Alright, thanks for the clarification! Are you set on going to Nova?
i know alot of schools ( nyu) have students start conducting research during the summer before they enter dental school do you think that is the case for nova too? if thats the case that'll be a great reason to move down there 3 months earlier
some schools (like UConn, Harvard etc) i got the feeling that it is highly recommended, as these schools have higher specialization rates and research is just another thing on your application that makes you stand out. I felt, having been there, that Nova doesn't really encourage it, but they certainly didn't discourage it either. It's a "take it upon yourself" and set it up with a professor kind of school (my personal feeling)so you can do research, but they don't "encourage" it?
at Nova:
i was also told that not many people do research there, i asked some dental student i ran into, and he said he only knew of 1 person doing it, and wasn't REALLY doing that much. My guess is that since it is a relatively new school their focus is still on academics and clinic instruction and that the research isn't too too strong.
i did feel however, that if you felt inclined, you could certainly get together with a professor over the summer between D1 and D2 and do summer research. I forgot to ask if they offered summer internships (paid or otherwise)
Overall though, fantastic school, and i came away with the impression that you would need to take it upon yourself to setup the research project with a professor.
Regardless of your institution, you will have to pursue research. Did anyone in undergraduate say, "hey, come do research with me." If so, not many. Remember it is an EC and isn't going to jump in front of you. Once can do research at almost dental school they attend, including Midwestern- where you might have to go to the medical school- but you're still doing research.some schools (like UConn, Harvard etc) i got the feeling that it is highly recommended, as these schools have higher specialization rates and research is just another thing on your application that makes you stand out. first part, my thoughts exactly. though its like that at every school, its more in your hands to be motivated to do it at nova.
second part, negatory......i believe boards are summer after D1!
