I am not sure if this belongs in the correct forum or not, but I have a question regarding research in under served areas. As a physician in the role of one the at needed specialties in under served areas, family practitioner, psychiatrist etc. Is it possible to have a research role? I'm referring mostly to bench research but interested in clinical opportunities as well. I imagine it depends on what type of underserved area, rural, inner-city etc - but in general as an "under served" care provider are research opportunities available?

Many academic medical centers are in urban, underserved areas of the country. Whether you treat these patients will depend largely on your field. For the ones you mentioned (psychiatry, FP) there shouldn't be a problem (except that research in those fields tends to vary in quality).
