Hi everybody,
If you are looking for a research project to strengthen your application, I have a lead for you. Researchers at the Smithsonian National Zoo are developing an ethogram (a behavioral map, sort of) for the endangered brown kiwi--the first time anyone has done this for any kiwi species. The hope is that the research will increase scientific understanding of kiwis in captivity and in the wild, and thus improve the breeding program. From a recent press release: The National Zoo and the Smithsonian Conservation Biology Institutes new science breeding program for kiwis will focus primarily on studying behavior and boosting the population using advances in reproductive technologies. . studying why some kiwis are more likely to breed and the conditions that lead to increased levels of breeding in these monogamous birds.
The senior bird keeper/project head is really nice and accommodating, and the time frame is pretty flexibleyou can do this pretty much any time before 6, any days you like. There are definitely observational opportunities for more than one person. Let me know if youre interested and Ill forward your contact information on to the researchers. Thanks!
