Hey everyone. I'm starting SGU this coming February and was wondering about research opportunities. Do any SGU students help with research on campus, or in the anatomy department... anything to boost my resume for later on.
Also, what do SGU students typically do in the summer after M1? Does the administration help set them up with volunteer/research opps at all?

Thanks! 😀

I'm an SGU student and I don't believe there are any research opportunities, however, I may be wrong. Even if there are, however, not many people take advantage of them, at least not anyone I know.

There is a program to help student match with a physician during the break. However, unless you live in a big city like NY or NJ they may not be very helpful. If you really want to shadow a physician you can either find an SGU grad in your area or just contact the types of physicians you want to shadow on your own, I think you'll have better success.

Most students just goof off during the summer after MS1, but it sound like your on the right track. I would recommend that you get some rest, but also make it a productive one. I ended up working as a hospital phlebotomist to make some cash, a job I used to do before med school.

Good luck.

Oh they don't have much research opp, huh? Well, I suppose I should be concentrating on passing my classes 1st term, anyway. Thanks for the suggestion of shadowing an SGU alum... it had completely slipped my mind. I really want to do something productive in the summer considering I just sat on my butt and vegged out for the past 6 months after graduation.
Thanks again.

There is research that occurs at SGU. In fact there is a whole building and program devoted to it. WINDREF is the research arm of SGU. SO if you are interested you can contact them when you get to grenada.
Also as far as shadowing, you can do that down in grenada as well- the cardiology selective is a great one. You follow a visiting doc in grenada as well as one of the smaller islands.
And as far as "goofing" off over your M1 summer- maybe thats a good idea- you don't get that many breaks to do so, but many students will go on one of the selectives offered by the school(the Prague selective gets rave reviews)as well doing research and clinical work stateside. I would reccommend a mix of both.

Is the Prague selective a good idea for those of us starting in feb 05? I mean, would we better prepared to go to Prague this summer (after the first semester) or next summer (after the third semester)?

If you are referring to the level of clinical skills you will have if you wait longer I don't think it will make a difference. You won't begin to study clinical skills until fourth term. I would suggest that if you have the finances, go and enjoy yourself. All of my friends who went had an incredible time, plus they know that you are a student and will teach you in the hospital what you need to know.

I did research with two SGU students a few years ago. I got the feeling that they really didnt have much research opportunities at SGU. All the students who are interested in research do it in their time off in the US.
It is going to be very hard to do basic science research. Basic science labs doing research require a lot of money to operate. In the US, most of them are funded by big federal grants, which I imagine are not available in Grenada.
I suggest you start making contacts right now. The people I worked with got in touch with our PI over e-mail during the semester and then came to work for him during the summer. Both of them were very motivated and have since matched into really good university residency programs.
Since I am not an SGU student myself, I cant guarantee that all my info is up to date and accurate. Nonetheless, this is what I know.
Best of luck

Either is fine. Since you finish in the 1st week of June, you will have some break before you head off to Prague(the 2nd and 4th termers have to however leave from grenada to get to prague on time

I didn't go to prague, but a friend did and he LOVED it. Has nothing but great things to say about. If you are interested pm an email and I'll forward it to my friend so he can give a better idea about it.
Also there is agreat thread on valuemd.com on someones experience last summer- really worth reading.

Also, does Basic Science research have an impact on what kind of residency you go into later on? I mean, if I wanted to go into anesthesia, would basic science research in a particular area be more advantageous? Conversely, would research in another area be looked upon unfavorably later on? In the latter case, would clinical research be preferable?

I'm just trying to develop a good strategy of resume building....

Thanks again...
