which one is more impt in the mind of a Residency Director? Say for example you are in the top 2/3 or your class but have completed and published a research project while in school.

Thanks

Unless you are in the top 10% I bet research counts more.

Its goign to depend on what field you are going into, and what the competitiveness level the program has.

anyone have any first hand experiences of this sort.....

I think what field and what program you applied to would matter too. Academic programs may be more interested in the research experience than others. Take time off to do research because you like it, your curious, or you are interested in.

what are the most important things that PDs at academic programs look for? i have no idea, and would like to start M1 knowing what i'm getting into...

nequagmire- there is really no good way to awnser this. It depends on what you are interested in. The best thing to do your first two years, is keep an open mind, learn as much as you can and have some interests outside of med school. if something realloy interests you, consider doing some research. but if you aren't research oriented, don't sweat it. I didn't even glance at research until my fourth year. I did a lot of teaching (as a ta for the school...) during my first and second year. Don't try and fit a mold.
