Hi. I am currently trying to figure out what I want to do this summer (before i start m2). I am not 100% sure what area of medicine I want to go into, but I am fairly interested in a few different IM subspecialities (heme/onc, allergy), EM, and neurlogy. I know this is a broad mix. My problem is that I have had limited clinical experience. This is why I am considering doing a clinical externship this summer (one where I would rotate through multiple specialities) to get a better idea of what I like.

However, what would look best on my resume? Research or clinical externship? Another option I could do would be to do research and then shadow a couple days/nights a week. What do you think I should do?

First, take a deep breath. Second, I recommend doing a research project for the summer at your (or another) med school if that is your bag. Better yet, search the internet for a med student research fellowship and go to another city to live/work. I did this type of research project in med school and it was a fantastic experience. Getting this type of research job looks great on the cv. Third, you must realize that this summer will most likely (>90%) be your last summer off for a very long time--enjoy it! As for shadowing, you will get plenty of clinical experience in medical school. Just my two cents.
