Research or teaching?

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
What do you prefer? If you have experience with both they will both be features of your application. What do you feel speaks the most to your future goals? Teaching or research?

I guess what I'm asking is what is looked as more favorably by adcoms

They both give very different aspects of your personality. Research shows your promise as a scientific investigator during med school, whereas TAing shows your ability to work well with others and educate, which is just as important for physicians.

Edit: In MY experience, I have preferred my TAing significantly more than my research endeavors, but if you can't do both I don't know what to tell ya.

What will be more favorable is probably whatever fits better in the context of your application. I think if you are not planning on a research heavy career or are not going for Md/PhD then TAing is probably the best option. A doctor is a teacher to his residents, medical students, his colleagues, and especially his patients and for that reason I think highlighting your potential as an educator is a really good way to go.

Stop thinking about what we want to see. Start living your life and doing what you want to do. Both of those activities are things that we like to see. You are best served by doing what you enjoy more because you will be more productive doing it.

A really popular Canadian rapper once told me, "Listen man, you can still do what you want to do. You gotta trust that s***." Don't think about it too much. This should be more than just checking boxes for you. 😉

Which one do you enjoy doing more? Choose that one. It's much more meaningful to have a lot to talk about in your PS, interviews, etc. In cases like these, students often do certain things to check off boxes and then find out that they really don't have much to say about their experience because their hearts weren't really in it. Try to avoid that and choose what you enjoy most.
