Research-Oriented Post Bac Programs for Non-Underrepresented Students

Hi all,


I am wondering if anyone can provide me with some leads. I am applying this upcoming application cycle. I am mainly interested in applying for MD/Phd programs, but I will apply to a few schools as MD only as well. As I am graduating next semester, I will be taking a gap year, and this is where I need your advice.

Besides the NIH Postbac IRTA program, I have been unable to find any other organized postbac programs that focus on research. I am very interested in doing research (volunteering and maintaining clinical exposure on the side), and I have to be able to support myself financially as soon as I graduate this upcoming semester. I have noticed that a lot of research-oriented postbacs exist for students traditionally underrepresented in medicine. However, as my experience has proven in the past with internship applications, my applications to programs that specify that they are interested in diversity are a waste of time and effort as I do not fit their criteria for diversity.

Can anyone recommend any organized postbac programs that allow you to get paid for research and are not looking only for applicants who are traditionally underrepresented in medicine? I understand that one can search for labs that are hiring research assistants/lab techs, but I am specifically curious in research postbac programs. I thank you in advance for your suggestions 🙂

As far as I know, what you are describing does not exist... Well it does, but it's called a job.

Unless you live in an area that lacks a large ethnic population (Like Wyoming or some state like that) I would think most Post Bac's would fit your criteria. Its kind of a strange question. And by diversity a lot of institutions usually mean what makes you unique as a candidate not necessarily your ethnic background.
