Hi guys,

I don't post much but had a question of opinion that I thought maybe someone on here would know better than me. Last summer I worked at a highly renowned medical center in a specific department on clinical research with a group of doctors. I'm interested in continuing research on that disease this upcoming summer, and recently met a professor at a nearby university who conducts research on this topic. I emailed him asking if he had undergrad positions available for the summer, and he responded saying he did, and to include in my application that we spoke and I'm interested in working with him. This is all fabulous and exciting to me..except...My freshman year started off rather rough and therefore my GPA is not ideal. I finished the year with ~3.2. However, I got my act together and this semester should finish with anywhere from a 3.65-3.8. Now for my question: I'm going to apply regardless, but what would be my odds of actually getting the position? Is the upward trend considered or will my application be disregarded because of that quite unfortunate first year?

Thanks for any feedback!!

If I was the reviewer, I would consider your upward trend to be a positive thing. I would also take into consideration that you and the professor have spoken that the professor knows you fairly well. Together, I believe you're a strong candidate 👍 If you can provide additional info in your application, I would maybe include a short paragraph why your grades kind of went down but you managed to work hard from learning your mistakes and brought the grades up 🙂

Applying to the lab or medical school?

Just the lab. I'm currently a sophomore.

@Richardh: Thanks so much for the feedback. The professor doesn't really know me at all. He gave a lecture at my college last week on another aspect of his research, but mentioned that he also investigates this disease that I'm interested in studying. I wanted to talk with him about it after the lecture but there was literally a LINE at the end (AFTER a Q &A) to talk with him, so I emailed him about his research asking if he had undergrad positions available, which he said he did, and to apply etc etc. Anywho, I do appreciate your feedback, hopefully you're right! 🙂

my 2 cents is that your grades won't have any impact on you getting this position...
