I am a 16 year old sophomore who is very interested in medicine. This summer I really would like to get involved in research or at least observe research being done in a lab. Does anyone know where I can find programs like this? I've tried to find programs near me (I live in MA) but I have not been able to find anywhere that offers this kind of thing to high school students. Thanks for any help🙂

Reserach opportunities for high school students are probably few and far between, to say the least. Even if you get a gig, it's unlikely that you'll be doing much other than straight grunt work. I'd stick with volunteering or maybe a clinical job until you get into college. Opportunities will be much more abundant and informative then.

The CURE program at Harvard should be something you should look into.

Another one is the High School Honors Program at Boston University

If you live in the Boston area, you should look into the Public Health Summer Internship Program at Harvard.

There's a Marine Education Internship for juniors and seniors in Provincetown.

The Forsyth Institute in Boston is offering an internship for the Scientific Scholars Program that features an eight-week paid mentoring program.

More research opportunities in other areas of the country are listed at this website. I'd recommend that you go to different states and such. See this as not only an opportunity to do research but to see the world (or country) while you do it. Some programs offer you a stipend and/or reimbursement for travel/living.

Good luck!

Thank you so much for the fast reply and links...I am especially interested in the Forsyth Institute program. I will definitely look into it more! 🙂

Columbia University is hosting an Internship Program that gives a small stipend.

There's an after-school internship program with the AMNH.

I don't know of any more for high school students in the New York City area though :/

I'm in NJ near the Jersey shore area. Anyone know if there is anything here?

I'm not familiar with the East Coast geographically-speaking (don't know what the Jersey Shore is) but here are the programs I found for New Jersey:

Coriell Institute for Medical Research is offering summer internships in all sorts of areas of study. They're located in Camden, NJ and offer a small stipend.

Keep an eye on this website (New Jersey Association of Biomedical Research) for an announcement about their 2009 internship program.

The Robert Wood Johnson Medical School is providing a CURE program as well for their cancer research in association with Johnson & Johnson. 12 people are accepted every year in New Brunswick, NJ.

If you're interested, there's a research internship that can either be year-long or summer only at the Princeton Plasma Physics laboratory.

what about long island?

No one has asked about programs in FL yet. But in case any of you folks are from FL and interested in a program for math/computers/science/research, check this one out:

Young Scholars Program at FSU

I did this program when I was in HS in the early 1990s, so I can personally vouch for it being a great program. Most of us wound up in careers in science and/or medicine; you will definitely run into some of the folks you meet here again, especially if you stay in FL. On an interesting side note, one of my UG student researchers a few years back was also a YSP alum who did the program ten years after I did. 🙂
