Hello, I'm a highschooler and interested in applying to a BSMD program. I was wondering whether anyone has applied for SEAP before (it's sponsored by the Department of Navy) and whether they would recommend me to do it? The research related to the area I want to do (Traumatic Brain injury) is related more to health/therapy rather than medicine, which seems to be what many BSMD/med schools (research related to medicine) look for. What are your thoughts about this though? Is it worth it to apply, although it'll take a lot of time?

If it is something that sounds interesting to you, go ahead and apply. You don’t have anything to lose by trying.

You’re still quite young, so who knows what the future will hold for your long term interests.

You need to get into college first, and don't worry about BS/MD's. I'd do it if you really like science and engineering to get a leg up on research opportunities you could access while in college. Otherwise, you can look up "summer research opportunities" for high school students if you want something more relevant but less selective rigor.

(Current senior in high school here): I would totally recommend doing the program! I just spoke with a few friends who did the program, and they said that it was an amazing experience. In regards to the research being more health/therapy, I wouldn't stress about that at all. You can tailor your college application theme any which way you want, and you'll still be able to shoot your shot for a BS/MD. There's no one "correct" path for getting into these competitive programs; in fact, a director of a BS/MD program I recently spoke with even said it himself: "We're looking for applicants that break the 'traditional' stereotype of a pre-medicine student-applicants who go beyond the regular clinical and hospital experience. This can be through social justice advocacy, passion for writing, etc."
