I'm an MS1 at a DO school. In a past life, I was a paramedic, bank teller, etc. Graduated with a Business major. Obviously, not much chance to do medical research there. I was able to assist at a lab doing sample preparation and other lab assistant duties for a few months, and did some data collection for an ER research project, but no publications up to this point (and that was all before medical school). I applied for this cycle of MSARF through FAER, but as the notification deadline for that program is nearly the same day as my school's deadline for summer research, I'm in a bit of a bind. My school's professors don't publish much, so publication chances are slim. I'm not one hundred percent set on anesthesiology, but I do want to manage airways as a part of my future practice. So EM, IM (with its subspecialties) and anesthesiology are where I'm looking at the moment. My debate is if I don't get the MSARF do I do a couple months at a hospital/ambulance service as a paramedic (with some shadowing if I have time) or do research at my school, probably without a publication. Searching the SDN boards hasn't yielded much in the way of information, so I wanted to check with the attendings here. Would not doing research of any kind during medical school hurt my application tremendously? Would doing a project without a publication help my application? Thanks for any help or advice in advance.
