Hey guys, I am finishing up my first year of medical school, and I was wondering if the sort of research that you do is very critical to the specialty that you wish to go into. For example, if I did research on diabetes and renal function, would that not help me if I later decided I wanted to do radiology? Thanks for any advice.

I don't think it matters too much.

As long as you have meaningful research (meaning you show interest/passion in the topic), then this summer experience should help you!

Publishing a paper on your research would also be helpful!

I think anything you do will help, no matter what it is in. Afterall, this is between your 1st and 2nd year so by the time residency interviewing comes along you might have changed your mind - they know that. Besides, just tell them why you chose that topic... "fasicinates me, opportunity presented itself, got to work with Dr. Y.... yada yada yada
Ideally, it has to do with you specialty, but there is time later on to do that.

Agree. Dont think it matters two much.

That being said if you are considering some of the more competitive specialties you might want to grab a specialty specific project just to go to conferences etc.
