Hi,

I am a freshman pre-med Comp Sci major, at a fairly small school. I was wondering if anyone had any luck finding research opportunities as a freshman. Since my school, and especially my department are tiny, I'm not exactly sure as to where to go to gain any research experience. The school's research catalog for whatever reason hasn't been posted, but last year there weren't many research opportunities I could pursue in my field. Should I just wait until sophomore year? The only other option I have is to apply for research assistantship at a local medical school, but without any research experience I figured it would be pretty foolish.

Does your family live near your college? Why not just go home for the summer and work in a lab at a nearby school?

Im 2 hours away from home. Fortunately my home does have a lot of colleges nearby ane I saw a few summer programs (with good stipends too). However I was under the impression that someone with no prior research experience has a very low chance of getting a position. Would simply sending out emails to professors of other schools that are offering research opportunities to their students be reasonable given that I could only spend 3 months?

You are not obliged to pursue research in your area of study. Science, psychology, economics, linguistics, entomology, agriculture, vet med, etc are all possible disciplines in which you might get involved.
