I am leaning favorably towards surgical specialties at this point and I understand having research experience makes you more competitive for surgical residencies. My question to LECOM-B students is this: What sort of research opportunities are available through the school and in neighboring hospitals? Are they readily available?

Also, the only research I have conducted is in the social sciences..will this hurt my chances at obtaining a research role during medical school? I don't particularly like the idea of doing research, are there other ways to boost my chances of getting into surgery other than doing research and rocking the COMLEX and USMLE?

Helpful comments welcome. Thanks.

I can pass along the small amount of info I know. Last year there was talk about at least some space in the school being designated and remodeled for basic science research, but I haven't heard anything else about this for a while. I know of at least one person who presented a poster at last year's AOA conference. There is/was a SORA (Student Osteopathic Research Association) chapter on campus - at this point, it appears to be inactive. Most of the opportunities I have seen for research have been focused on OMM, and I don't know anyone who is participating in them. There may well be other opportunities around, but overall IMO I would not say there is not a lot of research happening here.

As far as your residency questions go, I would try to talk to people who have matched in the field you're interested in. I'm sure that who you know, doing away rotations at the sites you're interested in, and your personality all factor into the process as well as boards and research.

This isn't really at LECOM, but the NIH has lots of summer research opportunities for med students. I'm from Virginia though, so going home for the summer would be nice for me!
