Research Required for GS?

Hey there - osteopathic MS1 interested in GS.

As I understand it, ortho/uro/ENT/plastics/Gas all require research to match into, period. I assume that GS is easier to match into than the other surgical specialties, so I am wondering what this means for research requirements.... do you have to do research? I really don't want to do research, I am getting married this summer... and spending some time enjoying the last real vacation I have until I get out of residency would be nice... But obviously if duty calls I will come to the table. Just looking for solid advice on whether I can match into GS without research.

Yes you can match, but it will help your cause as an osteopathic grad if you're interested in allopathic programs. If that's not something on your radar then its not an issue.

There's a big difference between matching at any program and matching at a solid program. There are a ton of spots nationwide, so it is easier on paper to match than ENT/Ortho/Uro but you have to also consider the fact that top/upper middle tier programs are not struggling to find quality students so, realistically, you won't be considered for all of those available spots. That's not taking a personal shot at you, but it's your reality and you should prepare for it.

Quality research is difficult to pull off in a year, much less a summer. If you dedicate a couple of months and nothing comes of it, you won't really have helped your cause. The whole last real vacation thing isn't entirely true, either. I wouldn't stress about missing your last opportunity to have fun. I can barely remember any of 4th year because I probably hit every happy our in Philly. Ah to be young...

Really just depends on how high you want to shoot for residency. Adjust your plan accordingly.

Are you an IMG? I think you will have a really hard time getting a spot in the US. Those stats are pretty low.

Find a program director from a lower tier program, get him to like you and marry one of his daughters. That would probably be your best option at this point. A lot of programs have step 1 cutoffs at a certain score and if I had to guess, your scores are probably below that cutoff.
