research residencies in neuro?

Hello,

I'm a mud-phud student who's still very interested in neuro research - are there any research-track residency programs in neurology that can provide for dedicated research time in place of some clinical time/electives during PGY2-4? There are plenty of "fast-track" IM research residencies, and I've seen an announcement (below) about the ACGME now supporting development of flexible research residencies in neuro, but I can't seem to find out about any specific research-oriented neuro residency options.

I'm not so sure about "formal" research tracks, but some programs have a very obvious slant towards research. Almost every place I've interviewed in encouraged research. Bench is more difficult than clinical but they're definitely there. Im just not sure if they can offer protected time other than electives, which is usually 2-4 months. Some frontloaded programs put most of clinical responsibility in the PGY 2 and 3 years, freeing up the PGY 4 year for loads of electives....if you're really into research, you can take that time. Good luck!

*on a side note, if somebody were interested in getting a phD in neurosciences, where will the dream places be? im thinking of doing that after residency. Right now, my sights are on Cambridge or U CoLlege London. But if there are good US programs, I'd love to know about them too. Thanks!

ACGME mandates 18 months of direct inpatient clinical exposure in neurology as a part of residency training,apart from some other compulsory rotations and the rest is all elective time. But residents,if interested, do take a 'research' elective which can be spent in bench or clinical research. You may choose to spend all elective time on bench research, but you should have a mentor for the project and your idea/concept should be well prepared before this rotation starts. From what I know, these residents take all the 'research' elective months in one block in pgy-3or 4. They do the IRB paperwork for these studies and are ready to go before the elective starts. This is extremely important so that you don't waste elective time in this paperwork. Then try to get your project done during the 'continuous elective' blocks so that you could publish/present the results in a timely fashion. There are residents who have done this. The best thing is to discuss this when you interview for residencies.
