I'm at this point planning to quit my current job and take something that would be more pre-med relevant. My expected timeline is to do a concentrated one year post-bac with linkage from 2016-2017, hoping to matriculate in med school fall 2017. Between now and that post bac though I want to do as much as possible to build experiences that will make me a stronger applicant (and hopefully doctor eventually).

One job I've been considering is a research study assistant. The pay is very low unfortunately, and most likely I'll have to ask for some financial help from my parents to make it work. Did anyone here do research assistant work prior to a post-bac? What are the most important things to look for in potential positions to ensure that they'll provide learning value and help make me a stronger med school candidate?

A second thing I've been considering is to take a new job, but a somewhat more conventional one that is at least slightly more pre-med relevant than what I'm doing now. I currently work as a financial analyst for a hospital, but am thinking about something like project manager, perhaps working in a group focused on population health outcomes, etc: something where I can point to making a contribution that helps patient outcomes. It's probably less applicable than the research, but would pay much better making my life before post-bac financially easier.

In both scenarios, I would continue to seek out volunteer experiences and exposures to clinical medicine wherever I can. If anybody has any other advice concerning my thoughts above, I look forward to hearing your thoughts.

Thanks!

correct me if i'm wrong, but it sounds like you're trying to get a research position that fits some or all of the following criteria:
  • starts very soon
  • you expect to stay only one year, then leave
  • possibly geographically-limited area
  • you don't have much or ?any research experience to offer the lab
  • you're going to be competing with lots of other people who also want to get into medical school or other professional programs
maybe some of those assumptions are incorrect, but based on the scenario above, i think you're just going to have to take what you can get when it comes to finding a lab assistant position.
