Hey, guys. It's getting to be that time when many of us SDNs have to consider not doing quite as many vagitch pelvics or snorting up the fumes of diabetic feet and start considering contributing to the world of EM research.

What are you doing? I've put forward a couple of ideas to my attgs but so far they haven't panned out. Throw out your projects/ideas and see if they stimulate something.

Some of my ideas (so far)

Nebulized magnesium in asthma in adults (already done for kids, one study in adults showed little no benefit)

How sensitive is the EKG for hypokalemia (already overdone for hyperkalemia, no good data for hypokalemia)

Anything else

Is it just me, or is magnesium one of those things that somebody trots out as some sort of miracle drug for various problems, only to find out that it really isn't very effective at all?

I like this idea. It's got the benefit of being easy, since all it will take is some chart review. It has clinical relevance. My feeling is that EKG isn't particularly sensitive for hypokalemia, even profound hypokalemia. I posted a case to that effect recently.

And with uncanny regularity. It doesn't seem like that long ago when it was going to be the miracle cure for cardiac arrest.

Take care,
Jeff
