Hi all,

Wasn't sure whether to put this here or in the Physician Scientist forum, hopefully I'll get feedback from either.

I'm looking to get some more information on the 2+2 research track residencies and also academic research careers within dermatology in general. I've checked the forum's history and couldn't find too much information.

2+2 track questions:
- Are there dedicated 2+2 spots? Are they mostly filled with MD/PhDs?
- Are the criteria for evaluating these applications different? Are they reviewed by basic science faculty?
- Do places help transition to junior faculty (e.g. Instructor positions) after training?
- How many people usually apply to these slots (trying to get a sense of competitiveness)?
- Is 2 years enough to be trained well in dermatology?
- Would emphasizing an intended career in research put an application at a disadvantage at programs that mostly focus on clinical dermatology?

Physician scientist in dermatology questions:
I've heard different things about trying to pursue basic science research in dermatology. My interest is in having a lab and devoting a majority of my time to research. As some have put it, "derm is where many MD/PhDs research careers end." Others have found difficulty in pursuing research if the focus of the department is not supportive. I'm curious how are the career prospects as compared to other areas of medicine that have more familiarity with physician scientists (medicine, pathology, etc). I've also heard (sorry for all the hearsay) that you are looked at as a revenue source and time away from clinic is not supported because you are costing the department money.

I'm hoping to hear from others that have attempted a research career and dermatology or are currently doing so. Please PM me if you want your comments to remain anonymous. Thanks.
